7 Ways To Leverage Your Business As An Asset
One of my favorite authors on business, self employment, entrepreneurship, and investing is Robert Kiyosaki. He has written several books, but his most famous book is called, “Rich Dad Poor Dad.” I accidentally read the 2nd book first called, “Rich Dad's CASHFLOW Quadrant: Rich Dad's Guide to Financial Freedom.” I highly recommend this book.
This book changed my life as it shifted my perspective on business and self-employment, one that I had been holding for many years. I also realized that I had made some really sound decisions over the years. Yes, I made many mistakes, but they served me well too because I never made them again!
One of the most outstanding lessons I learned from the Cashflow Quadrant was that I wasn’t just self-employed. My businesses were assets that could be leveraged in several different ways.
I’ll tell you why. Here are several ways that your business can be an asset to you:
First, the skills you learn as you build your business will benefit you FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!
They can even become a backup plan. For example, say you had to learn how to use different software programs while building your business. Cutting edge programs. So you taught yourself or you took a course on how to use them. Or maybe you learned all about Sales, Marketing, Branding and Cash Flow Management. Maybe you learned how to build websites or sale funnels for your business. These are all marketable skills!
You can leverage these skills if you ever had to rely on your backup plan and apply for a job or freelance work.
Not only that, but these are also highly valuable asset building skills for YOUR BUSINESS! Or maybe you create a new, separate revenue stream in the future and apply everything you’ve already learned to make that into a business.
Or maybe you start a joint venture with a partner, and your skills are highly valued because it’s just what your new venture needs to get started. See where I’m going here? The knowledge, skills and experience you acquire in business will benefit you forever.
Here’s one more: Maybe you even take that knowledge and expertise and offer it to others as educational products!
Secondly, you UP-LEVEL personally and professionally. You become the best version of yourself you can be. How? Well, personal and professional development go hand in hand. Building business tests our character. It challenges us to grow, evolve, learn from our mistakes, carry on, innovate, create, offer, share, build communities, and INSPIRE others. You become an asset unto yourself and hopefully to others as well.
Thirdly, you can leverage your business in your community by donating, creating events, supporting local programs, offering classes, gifting scholarships. The list is endless. You become the face of your brand and if that sounds scary, face your fears and UP-LEVEL. What is on the other side of fear? EVERYTHING you have ever wanted.
Fourthly, you can use your business to purchase other assets. There are many ways to go about this and it will look differently for every biz, but it could be real estate, a business that is for sale, or commodities and investments. For example, as a Jeweler and student of metal markets, I choose to invest in precious metals. The point is you can build wealth with your business.
Fifth, you acquire an unstoppable, grounded, and poised sense of self. An I can do anything approach and mindset. This too takes work, but will change your business, life and relationships forever.
Sixth, you build time freedom by working when and where you want. What could be a better asset than time freedom…ok, maybe financial freedom, but that comes too!
Seventh, using your business for networking, building partnerships and relationships and finding your tribe. There is nothing more rewarding than building communities, creating partnerships and giving your audience the result they are craving. In fact, this should be a significant part of why you go into business….serving others!
I know it is a scary and unpredictable time right now and starting a business, although it may be something you’ve wanted to do for quite sometime, sounds terrifying and expensive. The truth is, though, that if you start a business the right way, it can cost very little and the money you spend on it is a priceless investment in yourself and your future.
Is it best to be led by someone that has gone before you? Absolutely. it will save you time, money and mistakes. Perhaps you can’t invest in their top level offerings like coaching right away, but you certainly and absolutely should start where you can. Not only that, but during this unprecedented time, tons of entrepreneurs are offering more affordable ways to get started. I’m seeing it everywhere. I’m doing it myself.
